Early Preschool Teaching Days

In the early eighties, I was teaching preschool for a bunch of rambunctious, cute, funny, messy, intelligent, adorable and potty-trained four year olds. One of my many favorite things I enjoyed was creating pre-made crafts for the kids and all the bulletin board displays from the teaching curriculum. The kids loved all the little creative areas in the classroom, but one stood out more than the others. The Reading Corner. When it was time for storytime my kids would race to the corner of the room giddy with excitement and sit on the awaiting carpet squares.

For each storybook I would create character figures that would be placed on my large felt board propped next to me. As I read the story, the kids would be instructed on which characters to apply to the board. I know I must have made hundreds of characters that I would draw and color onto posterboard, laminate them and attach small bits of sticky velcro to the backs. I thought I had given them all away to other teachers, but last weekend while cleaning my filing cabinets.....I came across several of my little characters in a folder. I wanted to share them with you.

Pictured here is an elephant, a beaver and a cow.

Pictured in this row is a yellow pear, purple grapes, a cowboy egg and a goldfish in a fishbowl.

Discovery Health Channel

I can't wait for September. My daughter Alison recently completed a weekend stint as a special effects make up artist for the Discovery Health Channel cable television network. The program is scheduled to air in September. The New York television crew traveled to Philly to film the episode and Alison was referred to them as one of the best in the city. She said the director and producers were pleased with her work. :)

My Folk Art Painting

I finally finished my Folk Art Painting on tea-stained muslin. It may have taken a couple of days to paint it but I am pleased at how well it turned out. One little design turned into another design and then another until it reached this stage. My next task is to find a frame for it.
